The Department of Environmental Quality/Office of Environmental Assessment has a vacancy.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s (LDEQ) mission is to provide service to the people of Louisiana through comprehensive environmental protection to promote and protect health, safety, and welfare.

Join the team that guides Louisiana’s most complex environmental cleanup decisions. As the agency’s lead expert in toxicology and risk assessment, you’ll shape how contaminated sites are evaluated, remediated, and monitored across the state. This role is central to protecting public health and the environment—providing the scientific foundation behind every major remediation action taken by LDEQ.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus four years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), OR laboratory auditing; OR

A master’s degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field plus three years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing; OR

A doctorate in any of the qualifying educational fields plus two years of experience in an environmental program, nuclear energy or radiation protection program; Geographic Information Systems (GIS); an environmental, analytical, or research laboratory, LIMS (Lab Integrated Management Systems), or laboratory auditing.

Supplemental Qualifications:

Two years of scientific/technical experience at or above the Environmental Scientist 3 level in the implementation of RECAP and in providing technical assistance in the areas of analytical data evaluation/interpretation, toxicology, and risk assessment.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

Serve as the chief technical advisor on toxicology, environmental risk assessment, and RECAP implementation for all remediation activities.

Review site investigation reports, interpret analytical data, develop site-specific standards, and support higher-tier exposure and fate-and-transport evaluations.

Provide technical support across LDEQ functions—including emergency response, enforcement, surveillance, permitting, litigation, and public health advisories.

Lead updates to RECAP by identifying needed revisions, assembling stakeholder groups, and guiding the regulatory revision process through promulgation.

Deliver technical training to remediation staff and support management through review of technical information and participation in meetings with regulated entities and stakeholders.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.

Compensation:This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered.

  • Environmental Scientist Senior DCL-B: $38.45 per hour
