ABOUT THIS JOB

The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is in D05/Maintenance Section of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to HF 1. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Operates the following heavy machinery as needed: Asphalt Distributor (truck mounted), Backhoes, Front end loaders, Bucket/ladder trucks, Cranes/draglines (lifting capacity >20,000 lbs but <40,000 lbs, Dozers (<140 HP), Dump truck (tandem axle or trailer dump), Gradalls, , Hot mix pavers (<40 HP), Motor Grader, Lowboys, Milling machines (<90 HP), Road planer, Road widener (<90 HP), Sewer Cleaners (truck mounted), Striping machines, Sweepers, Track hoes (excavators), Under bridge inspection units (trailer mounted)

  • Operates skid steers, rollers, jet air patcher, 72-hp tractors with 15ft. bat wing mowers, and tractor mounted slope mower. Installs and maintains temporary traffic control devices and serves as a flag person during traffic control operations. Uses a variety of hand tools such as: shovels, rakes, jackhammer, demolition saw, chain saw, string trimmer, and pole saw. Performs manual tasks such as pothole patching, manual cutting of bush and grass, ditch digging, cleaning buildings, assisting in mud jack operations, cutting trees, collecting litter, cleaning & repairing of Asphaltic Concrete and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements as well as bridge decks, and other manual tasks as needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

  • Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with operator’s manual and manufacture’s recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely.

  • Will need light computer skills

  • May require nighttime operations or call outs for emergencies that occur outside of normal work hours

  • Lifting a maximum of 50 pounds will be required. Manual lifting of more than 50 pounds requires assistance

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Mobile Equipment Operator 1, 2, or 1/Heavy

Work Schedule: Work hours are 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Thursday

Compensation:

MEO 1 – $16.06/hr - Class D, Chauffeur’s license will be required upon appointment. This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour. A 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status

MEO 2 – $17.18/hr - Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. This position is eligible for premium pay of up to $2.00 per hour. A 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status

MEO 1/HEAVY – $21.05/hr - Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment.
