ARTIDIS Junior Computational Physicist in Basel, Switzerland

About the Junior Computational Physicist position:

In this role, you will help strengthen the physical interpretation of the force-curve signals generated by ARTIDIS automated atomic force microscopes (AFM). The main objective is to derive and refine contact mechanics models that better describe the measurement signal, and to translate those models into reliable, efficient research code that can be used in real analysis workflows. In this role you will collaborate with our Signal Processing team to maximize the physical interpretability of the signal.

Key responsibilities:

  • Derive and refine contact mechanics equations for AFM force-curve analysis.

  • Translate physical models into clear, maintainable, and efficient implementations.

  • Support validation of models against data, simulations, and experimental observations.

  • Document assumptions, derivations, numerical methods, and implementation decisions.

  • Present findings and collaborate with the Signal Processing team.

  • Contribute to scientific codebases used in Linux and containerized environments.

    Must-have qualifications:

  • Master's degree in physics, applied physics, computational physics, mechanical engineering, or a closely related quantitative field.

  • Strong foundation in mechanics, elasticity, continuum mechanics, contact mechanics, or a related area of mathematical physics.

  • Good coding skills in Python and the ability to write clean, testable scientific code.

  • Experience implementing numerical models or simulation workflows involving PDEs.

  • Ability to read scientific literature and turn theoretical ideas into working code.

  • Comfort working in Linux-based, version-controlled development environments.

  • Strong written and spoken English.

    Nice to have:

  • Exposure to AFM, indentation modeling, or soft biological materials.

  • Experience with C++, Julia, or another compiled language used for performance-oriented code.

  • Familiarity with performance optimization or high-performance computing.

  • Basic exposure to data analysis or machine learning workflows.

  • German language skills.
