Ocean Lifeguard Barnegat Light Beach Patrol (BLBP)

Position Type: Seasonal (June September)
Reports To: Beach Patrol Captain / Lieutenant
Full-time position from 06/20/2026 through 09/07/2026 9:00 AM 5:30 PM, 5 days/week, 37.5 hours/week, Days vary, Weekends & holidays required.
Ocean lifeguards will be paid bi-weekly $16.50/hr-$22.50/hr depending on experience.
Payment is by check or direct deposit. Payment is subject to deductions required by law.
Pre-employment background check required. All background checks are performed equally as to U.S. workers and H-2B workers, and all fees are paid for by the Borough of Barnegat Light.
Please note there is random drug testing during employment. All drug testing is performed without regard to an employees citizenship or immigration status. Drug testing is paid for by the Borough of Barnegat Light.
Position Summary The Barnegat Light Beach Patrol is seeking athletic, vigilant, and community-minded individuals to join our ocean rescue team. As an Ocean Lifeguard, you are the first line of defense for swimmers in the challenging waters of the Atlantic. This role requires peak physical conditioning, sharp observational skills, and the ability to maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with the public.
Primary Responsibilities Surveillance: Maintain constant, proactive observation of the water and beach area to identify hazards and struggling swimmers.
Rescue Operations: Execute ocean rescues using various methods, including swimming, paddleboards, and surf boats in diverse surf conditions.
Emergency Care: Provide first aid, CPR, and AED stabilization until EMS arrives.
Public Safety Education: Inform beachgoers of local ordinances, rip current locations, and daily water conditions.
Maintenance: Assist in the daily setup/breakdown of lifeguard stands and ensure all rescue equipment is mission-ready.
Mandatory Qualifications Age: Must be at least 16 years of age by the date of hire.
Physical Proficiency: Ranked performance of a 200-yard swim followed by a simulated rescue.
Certifications: No-cost training is provided that includes Basic Life Support and Advanced First Aid.
Desired Traits Environmental Awareness: Knowledge of tides, currents, and local Barnegat Inlet geography.
Team Synergy: Ability to work cohesively in a team environment and follow a chain of command.
Communication: Clear, assertive verbal skills for crowd control and radio transmissions.
Note to Applicants This is a physically demanding role performed in direct sunlight and varying weather conditions. High-level swimming ability is non-negotiable.
