Position Summary
The Principal Capacity Manager is responsible for overseeing the capacity planning, forecasting, and performance optimization of enterprise infrastructure across the virtual, physical, and managed service environments. This role provides expertise in workload optimization, virtualization, ESX hardware performance, and license optimization.
Operating in a highly collaborative, matrixed, and managed‑services environment, the Principal Capacity Manager leads enterprise‑wide capacity strategy, ensures the integrity and efficiency of compute resources, and leads a high-performing technical team. This role works with major infrastructure initiatives, providing mentorship, cross‑team leadership, and advanced analytical insights.
Primary Responsibilities:
Leadership and People Management
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of infrastructure, virtual platform, and capacity management professionals
Define workforce strategy, skills development, succession planning, and performance management
Serve as a senior escalation point for infrastructure incidents and complex technical decisions
Lead cross‑functional initiatives, infrastructure projects, and capacity‑driven transformation programs
Communicate complex capacity and performance insights to senior leadership and non‑technical stakeholders
Infrastructure and Virtualization Management
Oversee capacity planning and performance optimization for VMware ESX, virtualized workloads, and physical server hardware to meet resiliency and performance SLA's
Use data analytics and forecasting models to anticipate growth, mitigate risk, and optimize resource utilization
Direct workload placement decisions to balance performance, resiliency, and cost across on‑prem environments
Provide technical guidance for infrastructure consolidation and lifecycle planning
Workload Optimization nd Performance Engineering
Conduct detailed workload analysis to identify inefficiencies, performance risks, and consolidation opportunities
Recommend changes to resource allocation, VM right-sizing, and storage recovery
Lead root‑cause analysis for capacity‑related incidents or performance degradation
Maintain oversight of enterprise virtualization, OS, and vmware licensing entitlements
Analyze license consumption data and ensure compliance across managed and unmanaged environments
Execute license optimization strategies to reduce costs and eliminate over‑provisioning
Infrastructure Capacity Strategy and Forecasting
Maintain enterprise capacity models for compute and virtualized environments
Partner with various Business teams to gather their immediate and long-term capacity projections
Execute forecasting plans based on business demand, workload growth, and technology trends
Data Analytics, Modeling and Reporting
Use SQL, Excel, and visualization tools to analyze performance, capacity, and consumption trends
Build and maintain dashboards, utilization models, and operational metrics to maintain performance and cost
Validate data accuracy across internal systems and managed‑service provider reports
Lead or contribute to service reviews, contract interpretation, and issue escalations
Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regards to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). Required Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in infrastructure capacity planning, virtualization, data analytics, and infrastructure engineering/project management
Expert level experience with:
Virtualization platforms (VMware)
Infrastructure capacity management and forecasting
Data analysis using advanced SQL, AI Tools, Python, and Excel
Solid experience with solution engineering, load balancing, DR methods, network infrastructure, and storage technologies
Preferred Qualifications
License management and vendor governance
Experience with FinOps or cloud cost‑optimization frameworks
Experience presenting to executive leaders and influencing strategic decisions
Knowledge of ITIL or service‑management practices
Knowledge of Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure, GCVE
