The Director, Product Management – 4000/5000 Series Engine Platforms is accountable for end-to-end commercial and product leadership of the Perkins 4000 and 5000 Series engine platforms within Large Power Systems Division (LPSD). In direct alignment with Caterpillar’s refreshed enterprise strategy, this role operates with a customer back mindset, focusing on solving customers’ toughest challenges through differentiated products, services, and solutions.
This role owns product P&L performance , pricing, and margin strategy, lifecycle decisions, and customer value propositions, while partnering closely with Product Engineering, Supply Chain, Sales, Dealers, and Aftermarket to deliver profitable volume growth . Success is measured by financial outcomes, customer experience, and the ability to translate deep customer understanding into winning commercial and product decisions.
This position requires strong commercial rigor , balancing deep technical understanding with strong business judgment, market insight, and financial accountability.
What will you do?
Commercial & Business Leadership (Primary Emphasis)
Own full product P&L for the 4000/5000 series platforms, driving profitable growth through disciplined pricing, margin management, cost competitiveness, and lifecycle profitability.
Lead with a customer back perspective , deeply understanding customer operations, applications, and pain points to shape product strategy and commercial priorities.
Define and execute pricing, value proposition, and portfolio strategy across applications, regions, and customer segments, ensuring offerings are tailored to distinct customer needs rather than one size fits all solutions.
Translate voice of customer, market intelligence, and competitive benchmarking into clear product positioning, investment priorities, and commercial trade‑offs.
Lead business case development for new products, technologies, sourcing strategies, and major investments, including ROI, payback, risk, and customer value impact.
Partner with Sales, Dealers, and Regional teams to support key account engagements, commercial negotiations, and rapid issue resolution , with accountability for outcomes that impact customer satisfaction, revenue, and margin.
Drive alignment between Prime Product strategy, Aftermarket Services, and Digital solutions to maximize customer uptime, productivity, and lifetime value of the installed base.
Make data driven tradeoffs between cost, performance, quality, velocity, and time to market , acting with urgency to meet evolving customer and market needs.
Product & Technical Leadership (Enabling Capability)
Provide strategic direction to globally distributed product and engineering teams supporting the 4000/5000 series platforms, ensuring technology choices are grounded in customer outcomes and commercial value .
Ensure robust execution of New Product Introduction (NPI), New Technology Introduction (NTI), continuous improvement, and cost reduction initiatives that protect and grow the core business.
Own and champion product regulatory and compliance readiness across global markets, ensuring engines and systems meet all applicable emissions, safety, certification, and statutory requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Guide product architecture and technology decisions to meet regulatory, reliability, performance, sustainability, and compliance requirements while enabling faster deployment of differentiated solutions.
Engage directly with customers, dealers, and internal stakeholders to resolve technically complex issues that impact customer operations, experience, or commercial performance.
Drive current product performance to deliver best in class reliability, durability, application coverage, and total cost of ownership for customers.
Build long‑term engineering capability and talent pipelines for the 4000/5000 series platforms by partnering with Engineering, HR, and regional leaders to develop critical skills, succession plans, and future technical leaders aligned with platform and technology roadmaps.
Supply Chain, Services & Footprint Strategy
Collaborate with Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and suppliers on sourcing strategy, supplier selection, and manufacturing footprint decisions to optimize cost, quality, resilience, and customer responsiveness.
Support critical supplier quality, delivery, and cost initiatives with a strong commercial and customer value lens.
Partner with Services and Digital teams to ensure offerings are easy to adopt, easy to use, and clearly differentiated in how they help customers keep their operations running.
Skills you must have:
Commercial & Customer Acumen (Critical)
Demonstrated experience owning or strongly influencing P&L outcomes for complex products, platforms, or portfolios.
Strong understanding of pricing strategy, cost structures, margin management, and financial trade‑offs , with the ability to connect financial decisions to customer value.
Proven ability to operate with a customer back mindset , translating deep customer and market understanding into profitable product and portfolio strategies.
Executive level communication skills, with the ability to clearly frame decisions, risks, tradeoffs, and financial impacts for senior leaders.
Experience working directly with customers, dealers, or commercial teams in key account management, negotiations, or issue resolution .
Product & Technical Expertise
Extensive experience managing engine, power systems, or similarly complex industrial products .
Ability to guide engineering teams without being the technical designer- asking the right questions, challenging assumptions, and making informed trade‑offs .
Strong understanding of product lifecycle management, regulatory requirements, compliance, and quality expectations.
Leadership, Strategy & Ways of Working
Proven leader of global, cross-functional teams , influencing without direct authority.
Strong strategic thinker who can anticipate future customer, market, and technology shifts and position the platform accordingly.
Demonstrated behaviors aligned with Caterpillar’s strategy, including acting with urgency, thinking differently, open and direct communication, and accelerating early wins .
Resilient, results oriented leader who thrives in ambiguous, high stakes environments.
Education:
Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Supply Chain, or related discipline .
Advanced degree (MBA or MS) strongly preferred, particularly with a commercial, strategy, or technical focus .
Top candidates will also have:
Experience in external customer facing roles with accountability for product performance, cost, quality, and customer outcomes.
Track record of leading cross-functional decision making across engineering, operations, procurement, sales, services, and dealers.
Prior responsibility for portfolio strategy, major product transitions, or lifecycle inflection points .

Travel requirements may be up to 25% total (15% global travel)
This position requires the candidate to work full-time in the Bangalore or Aurangabad office
