CareFirst Paralegal III - Litigation (HYBRID) in Baltimore, Maryland

PURPOSE:

The Paralegal III position is an advanced position for an experienced paralegal with subject matter expertise in a designated specialty area of the law, such as litigation (plaintiff and/or defense), with a focus on regulatory, compliance and employment law, providing advanced support to the attorneys in the organization and to other Divisions or Departments as directed by counsel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Work in Specialized Area of Expertise:

  • Proactively, monitor and manage compliance with statutory and regulatoryrequirements in the area of expertise, including investigating and researching complexlegal matters, collecting and compiling information and documents and either timelyresponding to, or proposing draft responses to legal correspondence for counsels finalreview.

  • Draft documents, including proposing responsive pleadings or other legal documentsfor counsel, compile, update, and manage all types of litigation reports, slide decks,and records accurately and completely with minimal oversight.Manage and coordinate the companys response to requests for documents andinformation from outside parties, including, but not limited to, external auditors,regulators, enforcement agencies, outside counsel and litigants, including thecollection of documents and records maintained by other departments and the reviewof documents for privileged or protected information; and identify, locate and providerequested documentation to attorneys or internal staff.

  • Prepare and submit appropriate and timely pleadings and filings as applicable in thearea of expertise.

  • Assist with litigation matters and matters before courts and enforcement agencies asneeded, including preparation and maintenance of matter files for counsel inanticipation of hearings through closing cases; tangible and electronic documentproduction and discovery; document hold notices; case and file management; casecorrespondence; internal document collection; internal investigations; assist withwitness preparation; interface with administrative agencies, outside counsel, adversecounsel, and other external entities.

  • Coordinate with Risk Management and Executive Inquiry as applicable in the area ofexpertise.

  • Assist counsel with obtaining, reviewing and updating corporate policies andprocedures in the area of expertise.

  • Maintain legal forms and template documents in the area of expertise.Provide first-level reviews of subpoenas, garnishments, and other court issueddocuments for legal sufficiency for counsel and ensure that the corporations respondin an appropriate and timely manner. Work with counsel to draft proofs of claim inbankruptcy matters to ensure that the corporations financial interests are adequatelyprotected.

Legal Research :

  • Research will be predominantly in the Paralegal IIIs specialty area of law, and may include,but is not limited to, laws pertaining to health and health insurance, ERISA, corporategovernance, labor, employment, employee benefits, campaign finance, tax, intellectualproperty, antitrust, bankruptcy, federal and state procurements, Medicare and Medicaid.Research tasks will include:

  • Conduct complex legal research for attorneys on federal, state, and local laws andregulations as needed.

  • Analyze and summarize pleadings, discovery, company records, and other legaldocuments.

  • Review of proposed legislation and regulations, including research related tolegislative history, monitoring notices of proposed and final regulations and bulletins,and assisting attorneys participating on legislative implementation teams.

Administrative Duties:

  • Provide assistance with litigation matters, throughout the entire life cycle of a matter,including tangible and electronic document production and discovery; draft memoranda, androutine case correspondence; interface with opposing counsel, courts, administrativeagencies, and other external entities.

  • Assists with preparing charts, graphs, and spreadsheets; review and organize documents; interact with attorneys clients to gather facts or other information at the direction of the attorneys; and other tasks as needed.

Education Level: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience and a paralegal certificate OR in lieu of a Bachelor's degree, an additional 4 years of relevant work experience is required in addition to the required work experience.

Experience: 7 years of paralegal work experience in the specified area of expertise in a midsize to large law firm or midsize to large corporate legal department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of previous litigation experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to create, edit and modify documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Pro,PowerPoint, including use of track changes and version control.

  • Highly proficient in the use of Adobe and similar programs for creation, editing, labelingand maintenance of PDF documents as needed.

  • Highly proficient in communications by e-mail Proficient

  • Ability to apply judgment, critical thinking, analysis and thoughtful input commensuratewith experience and as applicable to the assignment.

  • Organized, proactive, work independently, take initiative and require minimal guidancefrom the attorney/client.

  • Attention to detail.

  • This position demands strong analytical, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.This position requires a consistent in-office presence in order to meet with attorneys and internalclients.

  • Must be able to meet established deadlines and handle multiple customer service demands from internal and external customers, within set expectations for service excellence. Must be able to effectively communicate and provide positive customer service to every internal and external customer, including customers who may be demanding or otherwise challenging.

Salary Range: $70,344 - $128,964

This compensation range is specific and considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, internal peer equity, and market and business consideration. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range, as compensation decisions depend on each case's facts and circumstances, including but not limited to experience, internal equity, and location.
