Actalent Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in Austin, Texas

Job Title: Mechanical Design EngineerJob Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer will support the convergence and internalization of autonomous mobile robot designs used in manufacturing operations. In this design-focused role, you will translate existing vendor-developed mechanical and electrical CAD packages into standardized, company-owned designs that can be scaled and deployed globally. This position is ideal for a highly proficient CAD designer with strong experience in industrial machinery, automation equipment, weldments, and sheet metal structures, working primarily on refinement and standardization rather than greenfield concept development.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret existing vendor 3D CAD models and 2D fabrication drawings and recreate them natively within the internal CAD environment.

  • Consolidate multiple vendor designs into a single, standardized mechanical design package suitable for global deployment.

  • Develop complete 3D models and associated 2D fabrication drawings that are fully production-ready.

  • Collaborate closely with internal electrical engineering teams to ensure mechanical designs support routing, mounting, and protection of electrical harnesses.

  • Apply sound manufacturing and fabrication principles to mechanical designs, including weldments, sheet metal components, and structural elements.

  • Support downstream prototype builds and early fabrication efforts as projects progress from design to production.

  • Ensure accuracy and attention to detail when interpreting and recreating existing designs to meet performance and quality expectations.

  • Incorporate best practices from industrial machinery, automation, robotics, and heavy equipment design into standardized solutions.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

  • 4–5+ years of mechanical design experience.

  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, CATIA, or 3DEXPERIENCE, with the ability to work effectively in any of these platforms.

  • Proven experience producing production-ready fabrication drawings.

  • Familiarity with industrial fabrication methods, including weldments and sheet metal structures.

  • Ability to interpret, reverse-engineer, and accurately recreate existing designs in a new CAD environment.

  • Experience supporting automation equipment, robotics, or industrial machinery.

  • Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Ability to collaborate with electrical engineering teams on electro-mechanical integration and packaging.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in manufacturing engineering with a strong design component.

  • Exposure to wire harness integration or electro-mechanical packaging.

  • Experience working with industrial machinery, automation and robotics, or heavy equipment industries.

  • Familiarity with applying GD&T in a production environment, even if not at an expert level.

  • Comfort working within standardized design frameworks and design convergence initiatives.

Work Environment

This is an onsite role working standard daytime hours, typically 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. You will work in a professional engineering environment that leverages modern CAD tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or 3DEXPERIENCE. The work involves close collaboration with mechanical and electrical engineering teams, as well as interaction with prototype and fabrication activities in a manufacturing-focused setting. The environment emphasizes practical, production-ready design, support for prototype builds, and adherence to sound manufacturing and fabrication principles.
