Job Overview
Lab Assistants are the heart of the lab. Ensuring each of the over 800k specimens we process annually is processed with precision and care to ensure proper preanalytical preparation. Data entry and moderate complexity laboratory skills ensure support for a 17 department reference laboratory.
The Off Shift Supervisor will have approximately 10 direct reports and be responsible for ensuring continuity of service expectations and team support through the Evening, Night and Weekend shifts of this 24/7 team.
Performs clerical and/or technical duties of low to moderate complexity, in support of laboratory operations.
Additional Information: Shift will be 5 days, 8 hour shifts, flexible hours supporting evening, night and weekend shifts.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Directs day to day technical duties for section. Assigns and reviews work, provides work instruction (OTJ or formal training) and develops team members. Evaluates performance of team members, providing continuous feedback. Manages discipline and performance issues; assists with hiring and firing team members. Identifies resource needs and develops recommendations for meeting needs.
- Participates in leadership activities for department, contributing to the achievement of goals and objectives. Supports customer service standards and handles operational and customer service escalations for section. Serves as a champion of organizational culture, influencing culture change to support section objectives.
- Primary resource for technical and clinical expertise in lab section and a clinical consultant to care providers, involving manager/section supervisor, pathologist or medical director when indicated.
- Participates in the support and monitoring of compliance with all regulatory agencies and federally funded programs, productivity analysis, quality/performance improvement and patient/employee safety; ensures compliance against federal, state, and local regulations.
- Responsible for the coordination and/or oversight of section specific programs/projects/initiatives as defined by leadership.
- Consciously works to minimize errors and takes responsibility for correcting and documenting errors in a timely manner.
- Accurately prepares specimens for distribution and analysis according to laboratory procedures.
- Ensures patient is correctly identified through the hospital registration system, accounts numbers are current and correct tests are ordered; checks requisitions for data entry errors and resolves questionable orders in a timely manner.
- Creates hospital registration encounters in an accurate and timely manner.
- Responds in a timely manner to patient/customer needs, including prompt attention to pneumatic tubes, courier deliveries, patient wait times and phone calls.
- Performs laboratory functions according to guidelines established by regulatory agencies and assists in coordinating inspection activities.
- Performs reagent, inventory, and general maintenance, as required.
- Leads, teaches, trains and/or mentors' new employees, students, and other healthcare professionals according to standard operating procedures, when requested.
- Initiates and performs procedure review and writing.
- Actively participate in process improvement activities.
- Assists in creation of competency documents and perform competency assessments.
- May procure blood from patients by venipuncture, fingerstick or heel stick to obtain blood samples for analysis following age-specific guidelines.
- May perform waived testing according to guidelines and documents quality control appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION - Associate's Degree or equivalent
EXPERIENCE - Three years clinical laboratory experience required.
EQUIVALENCY - Professional experience, beyond requirements, in a related field may substitute for an associate degree on a year-to-year basis.
CERTIFICATION(S) - MLA (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), or equivalent certification preferred.
Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Range: $27.25 to $40.88
