Summary/Responsibilities

“Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.”

This position is responsible for following approved procedures, for the start-up, shutdown, and normal operations. The position is also responsible for monitoring, servicing, and maintenance of all equipment and systems at a Combined Cycle Generating Facility. Applicant must be familiar with emergency procedures to follow during periods of abnormal operation. Accountable for knowing and adhering to all location safety procedures including Lock Out Tag Out and personal protective equipment. Performs maintenance of plant equipment; troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate equipment. Position must monitor equipment performance through test, analysis, and report variances. Troubleshoots equipment/system problems and fix if possible. Originate work orders for those problems that cannot be resolved by operations.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

  • A journeyman operator level skill.

  • Successful completion of the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) Test at the Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) level

  • Successful completion of the Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) Test

  • Ability to successfully complete the RREF Development Program for Combined Cycle Operators.

  • Experience in troubleshooting and correcting electrical, mechanical and I&C problems.

  • Must be fully competent in power station operations.

  • Must be well versed in the underlying theoretical applications of thermodynamics.

  • A complete understanding of power station water chemistry functions and applications (e.g., proper sampling, analysis, and related instrument calibrations).

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Must have worked as a journeyman operator at either a combustion turbine (simple or combined cycle), coal, oil, nuclear or natural gas power station. (Solar, wind or hydro experience does not apply).

  • Or, must possess military experience/technical school training (e.g., ancillary power operations), or, previous work experience equivalent to a journeyman skill that may be assessed at a Journeyman level.

Licenses And/or Certificates

  • Valid Florida driver’s license

Physical

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts to cover a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operation, around rotating and energized equipment.

  • Must be available for callouts and long working hours.

  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment

  • Must be able to work around rotating equipment

  • Ability to work in the field with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and humidity

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 50 lbs

  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.

  • Ability to sit for 2-3 hours;

  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours

  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights

  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat

  • Must be able to read construction drawings and prints

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as a hardhat, steel toed safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection and arc flash protective gear.

  • Ability to work around equipment that generates electromagnetic fields (EMF)

  • Ability to obtain and maintain respirator qualifications

  • Ability to work in confined spaces

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated basic computer skills utilizing windows applications, emails and work management software.

  • Demonstrated Operations experience and ability to obtain basic qualifications in mechanical, electrical and I&C.

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to monitor and troubleshoot equipment in fluid system operation (pumps, valves, boilers, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience or training in computer-controlled equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience working with mechanical and electrical equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience or training in hazardous material spills, fire brigade and first responder.

  • 5 or more years power plant experience as an operator, electrician, I&C technician and/or mechanic.

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles. Including basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations. Engineering experience with combustion turbines, HRSG's steam turbines and combined cycle balance of plant equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.

  • Industrial power plant environment.

  • Rotating equipment, poor lighting, vibrations, extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes/gasses/chemicals, machine operation, vehicle operation, high noise levels, high voltage, prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, lifting to knees-waist- shoulders - overhead

  • Call outs, outage response.

Specific Requirements

  • Valid driver's license; Must pass EEI MASS and Poss tests

  • Must possess a Journeyman Operations qualification and the ability to progress/obtain basic skills in mechanical, electrical and I&C disciplines.

  • Must have progression skills in mechanical, electrical and I&C disciplines.

  • Experience or training in hazardous material spills and computer-controlled equipment.
