JPMorgan Chase Senior Lead Software Engineer - Java in Atlanta, Georgia
You will join a team building and modernizing debit and payments capabilities that power everyday customer experiences. You will help shape platform direction while improving resiliency, security, performance, and cost efficiency across high-volume transaction services. You will work with product, operations, security, and engineering partners to deliver outcomes that scale.
As a Senior Lead Software Engineer at JPMorganChase within Consumer & Community Banking , you will own critical technology domains end to end, guide multiple agile squads, and set engineering standards that improve reliability and delivery velocity. You will influence architecture decisions, lead complex changes safely, and mentor engineers to raise the quality bar across the organization.
Job responsibilities
Define and evolve target-state architecture for debit and payments services using modern distributed-systems patterns
Lead domain-level technical ownership across multiple services, ensuring high availability, low latency, and operational excellence
Drive modernization initiatives, including platform upgrades and decomposition efforts, with clear risk management and rollback plans
Establish and enforce API governance, schema/versioning practices, and engineering standards through design reviews and reference implementations
Improve reliability through service level indicators/service level objectives, runbooks, post-incident learning, and capacity planning
Build and mature observability practices, including distributed tracing and metrics that cover synchronous and asynchronous workflows
Partner with security, risk, and compliance stakeholders to ensure secure engineering practices and audit-ready controls
Standardize event streaming and messaging practices, including idempotency, retry strategies, and dead-letter queue handling
Mentor and coach senior and lead engineers, strengthening engineering practices across squads
Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and delivery plans to senior stakeholders and cross-functional partners
Required qualifications, capabilities and skills
Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience
10+ years of software engineering experience delivering production systems at scale
Advanced Java expertise, including concurrency, memory management, and performance tuning
Strong experience building services with Spring Boot and designing secure, well-governed RESTful APIs
Demonstrated experience with cloud-native delivery using Kubernetes and containers, including deployment and operational practices
Proven reliability engineering experience, including service level objectives, incident response, and capacity planning
Strong observability experience, including instrumentation, tracing, and metrics across distributed systems
Solid experience with data persistence and streaming, including relational databases and Kafka, plus schema evolution and transactional integrity patterns
Demonstrated secure engineering practices, including OAuth2/OIDC, mutual TLS, secrets management, and software supply-chain controls
Strong collaboration and leadership skills, including mentoring engineers and leading cross-team technical initiatives
Preferred qualifications, capabilities and skills
Experience supporting debit, payments, or other high-volume transaction platforms in regulated environments
Familiarity with PCI DSS-aligned controls and partnering with audit, risk, and compliance teams on evidence and remediation
Experience with Camunda and BPMN-based workflow orchestration
Experience with Infrastructure as Code (such as Terraform) and GitOps delivery models
Experience with OpenTelemetry, Grafana, Prometheus, and/or Dynatrace in large distributed systems
Familiarity with ISO 8583 and/or ISO 20022 integrations, reconciliation patterns, or settlement workflows
