Position Summary
System One is seeking a hands-on Nuclear Designer with experience in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, or Electrical disciplines to support both operating nuclear facilities and next-generation SMR projects.
This is a true design-focused role, responsible for developing high-quality drawings and models based on engineering requirements, field conditions, and plant configuration. Candidates must be comfortable performing field walkdowns, validating as-built conditions, and translating real-world data into accurate design deliverables within a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and revise design drawings and 3D models based on engineering inputs and field data
Translate engineering requirements into constructible design packages
Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation (commercial nuclear), and SolidWorks (SMR projects)
Perform field walkdowns to verify dimensions, routing, and equipment interfaces
Validate as-built conditions and resolve discrepancies between design and field
Collaborate with engineering, construction, and plant teams to resolve design issues
Support plant modifications, upgrades, and design changes
Ensure compliance with nuclear QA programs, codes, and standards
Maintain configuration control and support document management processes
Required Qualifications
Associate’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, or related field
5+ years of design experience in nuclear or highly regulated industries
Proficiency with:
AutoCAD
MicroStation
SolidWorks
Ability to interpret engineering intent and produce accurate designs
Hands-on experience with field walkdowns and plant validation
Willingness to travel to project sites as required
Strong attention to detail and ability to work in a procedure-driven, QA environment
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting commercial nuclear plants or SMR projects
Familiarity with codes and standards (ASME, IEEE, ACI, AISC)
Experience with design modifications and plant upgrades
Knowledge of plant systems, layouts, and constructability
Experience working under NQA-1 or similar QA programs
Prior or active unescorted nuclear access
Work Environment
Combination of design office work and field execution
Work performed at operating nuclear plants, construction sites, or design centers
Must be able to pass background checks, drug screening, and nuclear access requirements
Additional Notes
Candidates must be true designers (not just CAD operators) with the ability to support the full design modification process
Strong understanding of the nuclear design change process is critical, including standard design change workflows
