Medtronic Senior Process Engineer (Sterilisation) - Athlone in Athlone, Ireland

A Day in the Life

At our Facilities Engineering Department in Medtronic Athlone, we focus on supporting Product Value streams to ensure that customer and patient needs are met every day. Our focus is on delivering and maintaining high maturity manufacturing processes and maintaining high-quality performance within our Teams. The Senior Process Engineer is directly involved in the achievement of our mission to contribute to human welfare by enabling the manufacturing and sterilization of our products that alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life.

This role will be initially focused on our Sterilization processes but may extend into other areas of facilities and manufacturing e.g. utility and energy systems, cleanroom validation, primary processing (e.g. Injection Molding), automation and packaging.

A Day in The Life Of:

As our Senior Process Engineer, key responsibilities will include:

  • Actively drive the Sterilisation Upgrade project activities, proactively collaborating with internal and external parties through planning, execution and closeout

  • Manage the coordination of interim validation activities within tight execution windows, ensuring compliant return to normal operations on time

  • Carry out engineering studies, establishing sterilisation capability for current and new products

  • Establish parameters and specifications for new cycles, following local and corporate standard operating procedures

  • Working in collaboration with the site Sr. Microbiologist, Quality department and other support functions, to create and have approved validation protocols, testing and final reports

  • Support dunnage preparation, sample builds and coordination of validations as needed

  • Lead / participate in cycle optimisation work to reduce cycle time and quantity of EO used in the sterilisation cycle

  • Lead / participate in new cycle development and validation for new products

  • Working across the matrix, plans, executes and validates on a variety of process and equipment change projects

  • Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installations, processing, machining and material handling

  • Ensures processes and procedures follow current regulations

Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience in Ethylene Oxide Sterilisation, utility and energy systems and in polymer processing i.e. Injection Moulding, Blow Moulding, Extrusion and Automation

  • Experience working with and managing vendors across several domains e.g. mechanical, electrical, IS/IT, software, design, process and facility services

  • Dynamic team player who can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams

  • Methodical and experienced in the use of systems for manufacturing processes and managing projects effectively

  • Demonstrates competency in project planning, execution and achievement of results vs. targets

  • Is energetic, self-driven with a tenacious drive for results

  • Has proven leadership ability, approachable and collaborates with others with ease. Is curious and questioning and establishes risks and pitfalls to ensure surprises are minimized

  • Is an effective communicator with all levels of the organisation and comfortable with presenting to senior leadership

  • Is energised by challenges and perseveres to achieve the result

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level 8 bachelor’s degree in a Science/Technology/Engineering related discipline (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Automation or equivalent)

  • Requires advanced knowledge of job area combining breadth and depth, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience ideally within Operations functions, preferably within the highly regulated Medtech sector

  • Ideally, possesses a formal Project Management Certification (PMP, IPMA Level C or equivalent)
