Job Title: Water Asset Manager
Job Description
The Water Asset Manager inspects and evaluates water system assets in the field to identify leaks and support non-revenue water recovery efforts. This role works closely with a Project Manager, using acoustic equipment, mapping and GIS tools, and mobile applications to locate and document issues across water distribution systems. The position is highly field-based, requires extensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions, and offers the opportunity to grow into more GIS-focused and project management responsibilities as the team expands.
Responsibilities
Inspect water asset valves, hydrants, meters, and water meter boxes for leakage using acoustic sensors and headphones to listen for leaks.
Notify the Project Manager promptly when identifying possible leaks or irregularities in the water distribution system.
Conduct non-revenue water recovery and control services, including leak detection through sounding of fittings and leak noise correlation.
Plan and deploy acoustic noise loggers to monitor and identify potential leak locations in the water network.
Support water network establishment and asset identification activities to ensure accurate mapping and documentation of system components.
Plan and implement step tests and assist with flow and pressure data recovery to evaluate system performance and identify losses.
Use phone applications and mapping software to log points, capture photos, and map assets and findings in the field.
Read, interpret, and measure Map/GIS information to support accurate field work and reporting.
Complete job forms, time sheets, and all other required documentation accurately and on time.
Ensure safe working methods at all times and actively participate in weekly safety meetings.
Facilitate leak detection work requirements, including advising on and participating in night work when needed.
Use initiative in the field to identify practical solutions that benefit the customer and the Water Asset Management division.
Attend or conduct site meetings with clients as needed to discuss project progress, findings, and next steps.
Maintain and care for all project-related equipment, ensuring proper upkeep and producing quarterly stock checks.
Work alongside a Project Manager, traveling from the Project Manager’s location to job sites or meeting directly at job sites as required.
Travel to various project locations and adapt to different site conditions and schedules while maintaining high-quality work.
Progress in the use of all equipment and tools utilized by the Water Asset Management division and remain open to learning new technologies.
Essential Skills
Experience working outside on a regular basis, preferably in extreme weather conditions.
Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day with frequent bending and lift up to 20 pounds.
Experience with Map/GIS information reading, interpreting, and measuring (preferred).
Familiarity with water distribution systems and/or acoustic leak detection (desirable but not required).
Comfort using mobile phones and apps to log mapping points, take photos, and record field data.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including travel and extended work hours as needed.
Self-motivation and the ability to work independently with confidence and minimal instruction.
Strong communication and customer service skills when interacting with clients and team members.
Strong focus on safety and adherence to safety procedures in all field activities.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Ability to meet required standards, including an acceptable record.
Ability to pass a drug screen.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Degree in Environmental Science, GIS, Biology, Geology, or a related field is preferred.
High school diploma or GED required; candidates without a degree should have at least one to two years of experience in a physically demanding job.
Experience with GIS software and mapping tools.
Experience with leak detection, meter reading software, and troubleshooting in field environments.
Familiarity with water utility operations and water asset management practices.
Experience with documentation, including completing forms, time sheets, and field reports.
Ability to work effectively as part of a geographically dispersed team and report to different Project Managers on various projects.
Interest in career growth into more GIS-heavy roles or Project Manager positions over time.
Work Environment
This is a field-based role that does not work out of a traditional office. The Water Asset Manager reports directly to job sites each day and typically works 8-hour days, with the option of either five 8-hour days or four 10-hour days, maintaining a minimum 40-hour workweek. The position involves extensive outdoor work in varying and often extreme weather conditions, including heat, and requires frequent walking, bending, and lifting. The role involves regular travel, with typical assignments requiring up to two weeks at a time on site across regions such as Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. A company vehicle and company phone are provided for work use; the phone is used for mapping, logging points, taking photos, and other field data tasks. Travel-related expenses such as hotel and food are covered via a company card in accordance with company policies. Each project site has an assigned Project Manager who provides direction and oversight. The dress code includes high boots, pants, and t-shirts suitable for field work. Personal protective equipment such as safety vests, sun protection, and bug spray is provided, and water is supplied in coolers on the trucks to support safe and comfortable field operations. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Asheville, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
