Job Description

The National Laboratory of the Rockies seeks a motivated and experienced Project Manager to lead ARIES capital projects within the MTES directorate. Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) is U.S. Department of Energy’s advanced research platform for energy system integration research, validation, and demonstration at a scale that reflects the real challenges faced by industry.

ARIES at Flatirons Campus (FC), also referred to as ARIES-IESS, hosts hardware and simulation capabilities supporting experiments for thousands of research devices, power levels up to 20 MW, and voltage levels up to 34.5 kV, and represents the interface between the distribution and bulk power systems. Some of the ARIES assets at FC are medium voltage (13.2kV) research grid infrastructure, controllable grid interfaces, hydropower emulation platform etc. This senior-level position is responsible for leading end-to-end planning and execution of capability build and infrastructure upgrades for advanced grid research platforms. The role involves collaboration across researchers, safety professionals, site operations, acquisition services, finance and other research operations staff to ensure project success. The successful candidate will oversee complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure and technology integration projects involving power medium-voltage grids, renewable generation, energy storage, hydrogen systems, data centers, and advanced measurement platforms. This is an on-site position based at our Flatirons Campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead planning and execution of ARIES-IESS projects following established NLR project management standards and processes.

  • Establish milestones, track project progress, and monitor adherence to baseline plans.

  • Support project procurement needs.

  • Early identification of schedule and budget risks and develop mitigation plans.

  • Provide status reports on projects to leadership team and other stakeholders, as needed.

  • Report metrics and flags on project performance for timely decision-making.

  • Collaborate across different disciplines like researchers, research operations, site operations, and other key stakeholders for successful execution of projects.

  • Review medium voltage electrical design packages for compliance, reliability, and adherence to campus standards.

  • Understand campus infrastructure to support new projects.

  • Guide technical reviews of designs, planning documents, and execution strategies.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Expert understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices and standards. Expert knowledge of technical field and related disciplines. Exhibits an exceptional degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness. Typically viewed as international expert within the field. Outstanding interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency in capital project governance and compliance.

  • Expertise in electrical systems, grid modernization, and integration.

  • Advanced financial acumen and cost management.

  • Leadership in regulated federal environments and infrastructure modernization planning.

  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within DOE or other federal government environments.

  • Project Management Professional certification.

  • Familiarity with federal acquisition regulations and DOE project requirements.

  • Working knowledge of electrical codes, standards and grid integration best practices.

  • An electrical engineering degree is preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Project Manager V / Annual Salary Range: $120,400 - $216,700

NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
