Job Title: CNC Lathe Operator

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up, programming, and operating CNC lathes to produce precision components to exact specifications. You will work primarily with conversational programming on CNC lathes, with some milling and toolmaking work, in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. The position offers flexible 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday, with regular overtime opportunities on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes to machine parts to precise tolerances and fits according to engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Read and interpret complex blueprints to determine machining processes, dimensions, and tolerances.

  • Measure, set, and teach tools accurately to ensure optimal machining performance and product quality.

  • Adjust cutters to achieve required tolerances and understand how these adjustments affect subsequent programs and tool paths.

  • Write CNC programs directly at the machine from drawings using conversational programming methods.

  • Modify existing CNC programs by selecting optimal machining conditions, including feed rates, spindle speeds, depth of cut, and axis movements and positioning.

  • Set up and indicate parts accurately before machining to ensure proper alignment and minimal scrap.

  • Use micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments to measure within .005 mm or 0.0002 inches.

  • Pull programs from the server to the CNC lathe and manage program files using basic computer skills.

  • Run multiple machines during long program cycles to maximize productivity and throughput.

  • Multi-task by preparing the next job while the current job is running to minimize setup time and downtime.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and adjustments on machines, tooling, and programs to maintain quality and efficiency.

  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize work, support overtime needs, and maintain a steady workflow.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety procedures and shop guidelines.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with programming and operating CNC lathe machines.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret complicated blueprints and engineering drawings.

  • Proficiency in writing, reading, and editing G&M code for CNC machines.

  • Competency and awareness of basic machining concepts and how parts interact in an assembly.

  • Ability to machine close tolerances and fits consistently to high quality standards.

  • Experience with conversational programming on CNC lathes.

  • Hands-on experience with common CNC controls used on lathes.

  • Ability to set up, indicate, and align parts accurately prior to machining.

  • Skill in measuring and teaching tools for CNC operations.

  • Ability to modify programs and understand the impact of changes on subsequent operations and tools.

  • Proficient use of micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to measure within .005 mm or 0.0002 inches.

  • Basic computer skills to access and pull programs from a server to CNC equipment.

  • Strong multi-tasking ability to manage multiple machines and prepare upcoming jobs efficiently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Welding experience is a plus.

  • Experience with CNC milling operations in addition to lathe work is preferred.

  • Background in toolmaking or working in a toolroom environment is beneficial.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and mechanical aptitude.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-output production environment.

  • Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with team members across shifts.

Work Environment

The role is based in a machine shop environment with CNC lathes and some milling and toolmaking equipment. You work flexible 10-hour shifts from Monday through Thursday, typically starting between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. and finishing between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. There is regular overtime on Fridays, usually starting around 10:00 a.m. and running into the evening, with some flexibility based on workload. The shop uses CNC controls with conversational programming, G&M code, and networked systems to pull programs from a server. You can expect a fast-paced setting where everyone is currently working overtime, with varied tasks and parts that keep the workday dynamic. Standard industrial shop attire and appropriate safety gear are expected, and you will frequently work around running machinery, cutting tools, and measuring equipment in a production-focused, hands-on environment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $49920.00 - $62400.00/yr.
