Position Overview
The HVAC Sheet Metal Supervisor oversees all sheet metal fabrication and installation activities related to heating, ventilation, and airconditioning systems. This role ensures that ductwork, fittings, and related components are produced and installed to meet project specifications, airflow requirements, and industry standards. The supervisor leads a team of sheet metal workers, coordinates with HVAC technicians and project managers, and maintains a safe, efficient, and highquality work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise HVAC sheet metal crews in the fabrication, assembly, and installation of duct systems, including rectangular, spiral, and custom components.
- Interpret HVAC blueprints, mechanical drawings, and specifications to ensure accurate layout and installation.
- Plan daily work assignments, manpower needs, and material requirements based on project schedules.
- Oversee fabrication processes such as cutting, bending, forming, and assembling ductwork using shop equipment and tools.
- Inspect installations for proper airflow design, sealing, insulation, and compliance with SMACNA and project standards.
- Coordinate with HVAC installers, project managers, engineers, and general contractors to resolve field issues and maintain workflow.
- Conduct safety meetings, enforce OSHA and company safety policies, and ensure proper use of PPE.
- Monitor inventory of sheet metal materials, hardware, and consumables; request replenishment as needed.
- Maintain shop and field equipment, ensuring tools and machinery remain in safe working condition.
- Document labor hours, production progress, and installation milestones for reporting and planning.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Extensive experience in HVAC duct fabrication and installation, including knowledge of airflow principles and system design.
- Prior experience in a lead or supervisory role within HVAC or mechanical construction.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, duct layouts, and specifications.
- Strong understanding of SMACNA standards, duct construction levels, and installation best practices.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problemsolving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe work practices.
- Physical ability to lift materials, climb ladders, work overhead, and perform field tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Sheet Metal or HVAC apprenticeship or equivalent technical training.
- Certifications such as OSHA 30, SMACNA training, or related trade credentials are a plus.
- Experience with CNC plasma tables, coil lines, or automated duct fabrication equipment.
- Familiarity with HVAC project management software or digital layout tools (e.g., Trimble, Bluebeam).
Work Environment
- Work performed in both fabrication shop and field installation settings.
- Exposure to noise, machinery, heights, and varying temperatures.
- Requires adherence to strict safety protocols and use of PPE.
