Job Summary
The Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) connects people, expertise, and campus systems to advance institution-wide sustainability solutions across the University of Michigan.
Reporting to Shana S. Weber, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Campus Sustainability, the Assistant Vice President for Carbon Strategy and Portfolio Performance is a senior leader within U-M's Business & Finance organization and OCS. This role leads an OCS engineering team and data analysts and provides strategic and technical leadership across multiple concurrent initiatives in partnership with executive and operational stakeholders.
The AVP helps translate U-M's carbon neutrality priorities into funded projects and measurable results by connecting infrastructure planning, capital strategy, financial analysis, governance processes, and energy resilience goals. Working closely with Facilities & Operations, Finance, the Office of Planning and Strategic Initiatives, and other partners, this leader builds investment cases for major initiatives and establishes the performance framework used to manage delivery and verify outcomes.
Success in this role requires strong enterprise change leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate with credibility across technical, operational, and governance audiences.
Location / Work Model: Primarily Ann Arbor, Michigan, with system-wide coordination across the Flint and Dearborn campuses. Meaningful on-site presence is expected. Flexible hybrid arrangements are available based on role needs.
Reporting Line: Reports to the Associate Vice President for Campus Sustainability (reporting to the CFO).
Team: Leads 12.5 FTE; two direct reports
Travel: Periodic travel to Flint and Dearborn, local travel for partner and stakeholder meetings, professional network, and other engagements as appropriate.
Compensation: $200,000 - $230,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities*
Lead U-M's energy transition investment strategy, translating complex technical and financial options into decision-ready recommendations for executive leadership and capital governance bodies
Build and advance business cases for priority decarbonization investments, integrating lifecycle cost, emissions impact, sequencing, and risk tradeoffs
Lead an implementation team and energy management portfolio supporting building-level conversions, efficiency initiatives, and long-range carbon neutrality priorities
Partner across Facilities & Operations, Finance, and Utilities to advance district energy, renewable energy, and other technical solutions
Manage key external partnerships and multi-campus coordination efforts that accelerate carbon reduction and institutional alignment
Lead major strategic initiatives, including sustainable aviation fuel and Scope 3 program development
Oversee emissions accounting, performance tracking, and annual impact reporting
Advise senior university leaders on carbon neutrality implementation, capital planning, and sustainability governance
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (such as engineering, sustainable systems, urban planning, etc.), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
Demonstrated experience leading large-scale energy transition or decarbonization initiatives involving complex infrastructure systems
Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional capital and operational initiatives involving technical, financial, and operational stakeholders
Demonstrated experience building investment cases for capital projects, integrating lifecycle cost, emissions outcomes, and risk tradeoffs
Demonstrated experience leading staff and managing budgets, including direct supervision and accountability for program performance and outcomes
