Job Description

The General Manager of Environmental Services is a proactive leader who directs custodial operations across the Alaska Native Medical Center Campus. This role oversees a large team of EVS staff, ensuring a consistently clean, safe, and healthy environment. The General Manager brings a strong leadership presence and excellent communication skills. Daily client contact, executive presence, and the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed, are required.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, coaches, and develops a large team of EVS staff and Team Organizers, ensuring consistent performance, safety, and service quality across all areas.

  • Maintains a proactive operational approach, identifying and resolving issues efficiently.

  • Communicates effectively and builds exceptional relationships with client partners, including VPs, department heads, and administrative leaders.

  • Manages custodial operations to established Cleaning Standards, adapting as standards evolve and incorporating new industry trends in sanitization and hygiene.

  • Oversees daily operations including scheduling, inspections, supply control, and coordination of specialty cleaning needs (e.g., mold remediation).

  • Manages the hiring and onboarding processes, conducts frontline interviews, and maintains accurate staffing documentation.

  • Maintains working knowledge of local, federal, and regional safety guidelines, ensuring a safe environment for staff and facility occupants, and supports an active safety program.

  • Demonstrates hands-on experience and the ability to operate, troubleshoot, and perform minor maintenance on floor care equipment and other custodial tools.

  • Plans, develops, implements, and revises organizational policies, operations, and goals.

  • Develops and directs the maintenance of business reports, administrative matters, budgets, budget expenditures, operational reports, and cost analysis.

  • Tracks financial data, forecasts, and expenditures to achieve optimum efficiency, economy of operations, and maximize profitability.

  • Makes sure the responsibilities, authorities, and accountability of all assigned employees are defined and understood; appraises performance, rewards, disciplines, and resolves complaints.

  • May infrequently perform some actual duties of assigned employees to cover various circumstances.

  • Travel required on occasion to various client sites across the region.

  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit’s success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Minimum five (5) years directly related EVS experience or similar.

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in supervisory or managerial role.

  • Intermediate skillset in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • A valid drivers license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English.

  • Candidates will be screened for tuberculosis exposure and infection as shown by a negative PPD, negative IGRA, or in cases where the PPD or IGRA is positive, a baseline chest x-ray, is required; and

  • Candidates must be immune/vaccinated for Hepatitis B or has a signed declination for Hepatitis B, and either is immune from or has been immunized against:

  • (i) influenza (annually and proof of vaccination or signed declination on file)

  • (ii) rubella,

  • (iii) rubeolla,

  • (iv) mumps,

  • (v) varicella chicken pox

Background Requirement

Level One: An individual is ineligible to work in any position that has Regular Contact With or Control over Children, Dependent Adults or Vulnerable Persons if the individual has been convicted of:

  • One or more felonies and/or two or more misdemeanors of Crimes Against Persons and/or Crimes of Violence.

  • Any Crime against a Child, Dependent Adult or Vulnerable person, regardless of its classification as a felony, misdemeanor, or other type of offense.

  • Any Sex Crime, regardless of its classification as a felony, misdemeanor, or other type of offense.

  • Murder

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Occasional exposure to harsh weather conditions; requires work be done both inside and outside.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Office conditions:

Description of environment: Hospital setting. Pace of work is medium and high volume of customer interaction.

Physical requirements: Employee is required to frequently lift up to 50 lbs. This position is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.

Travel: This position requires travel up to 25% of the time. Employee may travel to other client units in town.
