Position Title: Pool/Splash Pad Lifeguard Seasonal Worker

General Purpose

The principal function of an employee in this class is to monitor the public safety while using the swimming

pool and splashpad areas.

Supervision Received

? Works under the supervision of and reports directly to the Pool/Splash Pad Facility Manager

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

? Rescue, life saving, and first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills related to a swimming

environment;

? City rules and regulations in an aquatic environment;

? Customer service principles.

Ability to:

? Listen carefully to, understand, and effectively communicate through oral, written, and interpersonal

communication channels.

? Follow oral and written instructions.

? Work with minimal supervision.

? Recognize and respond quickly in an emergency situation, including the ability to discern sounds and

visual cues of an emergency nature against a distracting background of normal noise and physical

activity.

? Perform rescue, first aid, and CPR functions in an emergency situation;

? Prepare written incident reports.

? Swim 300 yards, demonstrating use of freestyle, breaststroke, and side stroke.

? Fairly and uniformly enforce pool and facility regulations;

? Use tools common to the performance of the duty, including whistle, megaphone, rescue tube, and

first aid equipment;

? Lift objects over 50 pounds;

? Sit for up to 40 minutes per rotation on a lifeguard chair or station, including a station reached by

ladder;

? Work in an outdoor environment in occasionally adverse weather conditions;

? Work with customers of all age ranges, from infants through adults and older adults;

? Complete assigned tasks as directed and meet deadlines.

? Maintain a professional demeanor at all times;

? Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of

time-sensitive deadlines;

? Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

? Use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications

and/or oral instructions.

Minimum Acceptable Experience and Training

? Lifeguard first aid certification.

? CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification.

? Ability to successfully pass a Skills Test.

? Must have current Lifeguard Training.

? Previous experience and/or involvement in recreation programs, lifeguarding or swimming preferred.

Essential Physical Abilities

An employee in this class should have sufficient physical and mental capability, with or without reasonable

in a swimming environment;

? View and review a wide variety of written materials, to discern potential and real emergencies, and to

observe public areas for safety and improvement;

? Perform essential job functions in an indoor or outdoor setting that may require lifting/moving 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing,

stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting (moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally moving up to 80 pounds).

Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performing required job functions. Frequent exposure to changing

weather conditions. The employee frequently works in precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or

airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity exists. Mental

application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and critical thinking.
