Actalent Labview Developer in Allen, Texas
Job Title: LabVIEW Developer
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced LabVIEW Developer to design, refactor, and maintain production test software for optical transceivers in a modern manufacturing environment. You will work primarily in LabVIEW 2023 to rebuild legacy applications using best practices, improve software architecture and stability, and support multiple products and test stations used on the production floor. This role is highly hands-on, combining software development with direct interaction with test stations and instrumentation.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain production test software for optical transceivers using LabVIEW 2023.
Refactor and rewrite legacy LabVIEW code to align with modern best practices, improve architecture, and reduce system crashes.
Implement and maintain LabVIEW Object-Oriented Class structures and traditional architectures such as Queued Message Handler (QMH).
Develop software that interfaces with instrumentation and external applications, including databases, Python, and other systems.
Configure and integrate test stations on the production floor, including deploying and validating LabVIEW applications directly on test machines.
Ensure thorough in-code documentation and code comments to create supportable, maintainable solutions.
Use source code control tools (such as GitLab and SourceTree) and follow GitFlow or similar branching processes for version management.
Track and manage work through JIRA, including updating tickets, managing backlog items, and clearly documenting progress and issues.
Collaborate with a team of engineers to support two main products and up to four different software applications, each involving multiple LabVIEW test programs.
Diagnose and resolve software crashes and performance issues, proposing and implementing architectural improvements.
Follow the full software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, testing on hardware, deployment, and support.
Provide clear, honest reporting of tasks completed, time spent, and challenges encountered, maintaining high standards of integrity and accountability.
Work on-site to support test stations and collaborate closely with engineering and production teams.
Essential Skills
At least 5 years of hands-on experience as a LabVIEW developer.
Strong proficiency in LabVIEW 2023 or recent LabVIEW versions, with the ability to develop complex production test applications.
Experience working within the telecommunications domain, with at least 1 year of experience, ideally involving laser and photodiode-related telecom codes.
Experience developing production test software for transceivers or similar electronic/optical devices.
Proficiency with LabVIEW implementation of Object-Oriented Class structures.
Familiarity with traditional LabVIEW architectures, including QMH (Queued Message Handler) structures.
Demonstrated ability to apply LabVIEW best practices in code design, including modular, supportable, and well-documented code.
Experience interfacing LabVIEW code with other applications and services, such as databases and Python.
Knowledge of instrumentation control and communication using LabVIEW over interfaces such as serial, USB, and TCP.
Ability to work on-site in an office and lab environment to interact directly with test stations and hardware.
Strong sense of integrity and the ability to accurately document tasks, progress, and time spent.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally a BS in Electrical Engineering to better understand and code for electronic devices.
Experience as a Test Engineer in the telecommunications industry.
Familiarity with fiber optic transmission principles as applied to transceivers.
Experience with the Workers for LabVIEW developer environment.
Experience with source code control using GitLab and SourceTree, following GitFlow or similar workflows.
Experience working with Atlassian JIRA for ticketing, backlog management, and progress tracking.
Experience in test engineering, including building and supporting test architectures and test stations.
Experience with LabVIEW architectures beyond QMH, and comfort working with multiple LabVIEW applications per product.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a team of engineers and integrate smoothly into an established engineering culture.
Work Environment
The role is based on-site in a modern, brand-new engineering and manufacturing facility focused on electronics, optical solutions, fiber optics, and network connectivity. You will work closely with a team of approximately 12 engineers and interact regularly with colleagues at other engineering sites. The environment is hands-on and collaborative, with direct access to production test stations and instrumentation, allowing you to both develop and immediately test your LabVIEW code on the machines. Work is conducted primarily in LabVIEW 2023, supported by tools such as GitLab, SourceTree, and JIRA. The culture values integrity, transparency, and teamwork; you are expected to communicate clearly about your work, document your progress, and integrate well with the existing team. The setting combines office and lab spaces, where you will spend time both at your development workstation and on the production floor working with test equipment.
