Job Title: CNC Operator
Job Description
This role involves operating CNC mills and lathes to perform machining operations on a variety of metal parts. Depending on your experience, you will either focus on machine operation or take on more advanced setup responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on learning and growing into full setup capabilities over time. You will work with modern CNC equipment and inspection tools to ensure parts meet precise specifications in a production machine shop environment.
Responsibilities
Operate CNC mills and CNC lathes to perform machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, and threading on parts including castings, forgings, and bar stock.
Load and unload parts from CNC machines in a safe and efficient manner throughout the production process.
Change out cutting tools, inserts, and other tooling as required to maintain part quality and meet production requirements.
Monitor machine operations, observe cutting conditions, and make basic adjustments as needed to ensure parts meet specifications after the job is set up by a setup machinist.
Follow established setup instructions and job travelers to run production parts consistently and accurately.
Use inspection tools such as micrometers and calipers to measure parts and verify that dimensions meet print and quality requirements.
Identify and communicate any quality issues, dimensional discrepancies, or machine concerns to the appropriate personnel.
Maintain a clean and organized work area, including machines, tooling, and measuring instruments.
Follow all safety procedures and shop guidelines while operating CNC equipment and handling materials.
Actively learn setup processes with the long-term goal of performing CNC mill and lathe setups independently.
Essential Skills
Experience operating CNC mills and/or CNC lathes in a machining or machine shop environment.
Ability to perform basic machine operation tasks, including loading and unloading parts and changing tools.
Familiarity with machining operations such as turning, boring, facing, and threading.
Ability to read and use precision inspection tools, including micrometers and calipers, to verify part dimensions.
General understanding of CNC machining processes and workflow in a production machine shop.
Good soft skills, including communication, reliability, teamwork, and willingness to learn.
Comfort working with CNC controls such as Fanuc and Haas (experience with either is highly beneficial).
Familiarity with Doosan CNC equipment or similar CNC mills and lathes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Prior experience in a CNC machine shop environment running production jobs.
Exposure to CNC setup activities, including setting tools, loading programs, and verifying first-piece parts.
Experience with multiple CNC platforms and controls, including Fanuc and Haas.
Experience working with various CNC mills and lathes in a machining environment.
Demonstrated interest in developing into a CNC setup machinist over time.
Ability to follow written instructions, job travelers, and verbal directions accurately.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality parts.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Alexandria, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
