New York State Senate Archivist in ALBANY, New York
The New York State Senate is seeking an Archivist to curate the Legislative Librarys Special Collection, manage the Biographical Directory of the New York State Legislature, and direct the development and implementation of a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).This role is responsible for establishing a centralized repository for both born-digital and digitized collections, developing policies and workflows that ensure long-term preservation, discoverability, and access to the Senates historical record. The DAMS will serve as a core institutional asset, supporting public access, research, and media operations while preserving the evolving history of Senate work in the digital age. The successful candidate will guide the selection, implementation, and ongoing stewardship of a searchable repository that strengthens how the Senate preserves, manages, and shares its institutional history. Key Responsibilities * Collection Management: Curate and steward the Legislative Librarys Special Collection of historical books and objects. * System Implementation: Lead the selection, implementation, and administration of the DAMS as the Senates primary repository for digital content, including ingest, configuration, and governance. * Workflow Management: Document and manage workflows for digitization, accessioning, and digital preservation. Oversee workflows and quality assurance for the Biographical Directory of the New York State Legislature. * Standards & Metadata: Develop and implement metadata standards and controlled vocabularies to support long-term discovery and access. * Collaboration: Partner with Senate Technology Services (STS) to support preservation systems, infrastructure, and storage. * Institutional Asset Building: Advise on file formats and best practices to ensure long-term usability of media assets. * Public Engagement: Facilitate access to digital collections for research, education, and exhibits. * Qualifications & Skills * Education: Graduate degree in library and information science, digital archiving, or a related field. * Experience: Minimum of two years experience in digital archives, digital preservation, or digital asset management. * Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of digital preservation standards, including the NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation. * Format Proficiency: Expertise in image, audio, video, and text formats and their preservation requirements. * System Knowledge: Experience with relational collections management systems and digital storage best practices. * Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across departments.
