Akron General's 52B Orthopaedic/Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in knee and hip replacement, shoulder, ankle, and spinal surgeries. Patients in this unit require immediate and frequent mobilization, which decreases their hospital length of stay and post-surgical complications.

Our Center for Workplace Violence Prevention and Caregiver Well-Being sets caregiver safety as a priority, identifying, reporting and responding to incidents and providing safety resources.
A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. including every other weekend and 3 holidays per year.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide direct nursing care.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population.
Complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
Develop and update goals, involve patients and families in developing plans of care, coordinate the interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
Provide nursing care, administer treatments and medication, and document.
Participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process.
Delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing (ADN or BSN program)
Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Physical Requirements:
Full range of body motion for handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination
Standing and walking for extended periods of time
Corrected vision and hearing to normal range
Working under stressful conditions and irregular hours
Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
Physical Demand requirements in excess of those for Light Work
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follow Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures
