Our externship program offers practical, hands-on experience in the ?eld of criminal prosecution, allowing participants to develop their skills, deepen their knowledge, and engage in work that supports victims, public safety and justice.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is accepting applications for 1st and 2nd year law students who are seeking credit for experience working in the field of criminal justice. Law Student Interns may assist in a variety of areas gaining valuable knowledge along the way. Interns can expect to assist with legal research, writing, and case preparation in a real-world environment.

This opportunity aims to provide practical skills, networking opportunities, and career clarity. This internship opportunity is unpaid.

Examples of Duties for Success

A Law Student Intern may perform/assist with the following:

  • Conduct legal research and analysis on criminal law issues, statutes, case law, and procedural rules.

  • Assist with legal writing, including drafting memoranda, motions, briefs, and summaries for attorney review.

  • Support case preparation by organizing files, reviewing discovery, summarizing evidence, and assisting with trial preparation as appropriate.

  • Observe court proceedings, including hearings, motions practice, and trials, to gain practical insight into courtroom advocacy and procedure.

  • Engage with members of the prosecution team, including attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, paralegals, and support staff, to understand the collaborative nature of case management.

  • Complete additional projects and assignments as directed to support office priorities.

Qualifications for Success

Successful interns are proactive, detail-oriented, and eager to learn while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards.

Must be enrolled in the 1st or 2nd Year of an accredited law school.
