Powell Industries, Inc. Automation Engineering Manager in Acheson, Alberta

We are currently seeking a motivated individual to be a part of our growing Powell Automation Division (PAD). This exciting position allows the ability to provide functional and strategic leadership that offers a balance between empowerment and direction to produce innovative and creative solutions to solve problems for our clients. Additionally, you will interact and collaborate with diverse professionals to help grow and fuel the future presence of PAD in the automation space! Key responsibilities include leading a team responsible for completing engineering, testing, and implementation of automation solutions for Medium and Low Voltage switchgear applications.

Essential Responsibilities

  • AS A PAD AUTOMATION ENGINEERING MANAGER YOU WILL:

  • Build and deliver the roadmap for new and existing PAD solutions and offers. This includes collaborating with key PAD business development partners to target new opportunities.

  • Lead a technical team and manage direct reports in providing complex technical solutions for power systems and automation applications in MV and LV switchgear.

  • Develop, set, create, and drive KPI metrics and performance to support scalable automation growth

  • Revise, develop, and maintain engineering procedures and standards to drive increase growth and efficiency of PAD project execution. This includes ensuring that proper records and other documentation are maintained.

  • Build and maintain customer relationships, including helping to manage customer expectations of PAD deliverables.

  • Develop strategic initiatives to continuously drive the growth and expansion of PAD in the automation space. This may include customer site visits to interface with and provide innovative solutions to meet customer requirements/ needs.

  • Provides engineering support during the bid phase, supports presentation of proposals to customers.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing engineering teams

  • Strong technical background and experience (senior level) in at least one of the following is required:

    a. Automation and Control systems

    b. Power Systems

    c. Electrical System Integration preferably for electrical switchgear applications

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Master degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Registered Engineer (P. Eng.) in a Canadian Province

  • Demonstrate leadership, mentorship, and problem-solving skills for engineering teams and activities.

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment

  • Must have excellent English communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and collaboration skills to effectively work with both business and technical teams

  • Excel working independently as well as in a team-oriented roles

  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement

  • Develop and utilize engineering related KPIs to demonstrate growth, efficiency, and cost improvements for PAD engineering solutions

  • Control engineering costs through monitoring budget performance of engineering project execution.

  • Manage and oversee the use of subcontractors

  • Willingness to travel up to 25%

    Working & Environmental Conditions

  • Travel is required for this position. The amount of travel is estimated to be 25% of the time to customer sites.

  • The customer sites can be refineries, utility substation yards or even offshore platforms.

  • The position will require working in an office environment as well has performing testing on the manufacturing floor with the equipment
