Overview
Bowhead is seeking a Machinist to support the Army Research Lab (ARL) on Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).
The Machinist will perform standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations by following standard work methods on recurring assignments but receives explicit instructions on unfamiliar assignments. The Machinist will have their technical adequacy of routine work reviewed on completion and non-routine work may also be reviewed in progress. The Machinist will be expected to become a certified Ammo Handler.
Responsibilities
Job duties will include the following, but other duties may be assigned:
Following specific instructions will test plans.
Will conduct a variety of tests using established methods by preparing test specimens, adjusting and operating equipment, and recording test data, pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors.
Will perform mechanical design of prototype fixtures, instruments, machinery.
Check drawings provided by engineers and scientists to determine the adequacy of the drawings for target construction and successful completion of the associated test.
Will perform non-routine and complex assignments involving the reduction of instrumentation data that documents the results of ballistic experiments.
Will be expected to troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions.
Will be required to pass all required training deemed necessary by the facility manager and be familiar with all sites and SOPs for every site at the facility.
Will assist with maintenance/upkeep (sweeping, general organization and housekeeping) of facility; modify facility as required for specific projects.
Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
CAD experience is required.
Experience working with weapons and ammunition and using lathes, drill presses, and milling machines for fabrication and modification of testing components.
Ability to use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometer and gages and must have a good understanding of tolerances.
Strong math skills.
Comfortable with computers and a good understanding of Excel.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds repetitively.
Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time.
Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically.
SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible role based in Aberdeen, Maryland. The hourly rate ranges from $27.77 to $34.59, depending on years of experience, in addition to a $6.25 per hour Health and Welfare benefit in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement that governs this contract. All employees are required to join the CBA at time of hire.
