General Information
The City of Ames Water Pollution Control Department brings together collaboration, creativity, and innovation to support a cleaner, more sustainable community. We are excited to announce an opportunity for a W&PC Community Outreach Coordinator.
The W&PC Community Outreach Coordinator serves as an informational and educational liaison with customers of the Water & Pollution Control Department. This position assists in the development and implementation of public education and outreach programs to schools, civic groups, residential and commercial customers, policy makers, regulators, and other stakeholders. The coordinator educates customers on the role of water and wastewater utilities, and on the value and importance of water conservation.
Hours worked will vary throughout the year, with more hours in the spring and summer, and fewer hours in the fall and winter. Hours will average less than 20 hours per week on an annual basis.

Examples of Essential Job Functions
Delivers educational and informational materials to customers in a variety of formats and settings, including: science fairs, classroom presentations, and other environmentally-focused events; various social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram; direct mailing pieces such as the annual Consumer Confidence Report; preparing materials for other City publications such as CitySide, neighborhood newsletters, and others. Prepares charts, graphs, infographics, and other visuals for use in marketing materials and use by other department staff. Helps plan, organize, and execute public outreach events such as open houses, educational fairs, and festivals; these may include collaborative events with Iowa State University, other City departments, and other outside organizations with a shared mission for water conservation and sustainability. Design and procure promotional materials to be used in conjunction with outreach events. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Required:
-Minimum of two years of post-high school education in one of the following areas: Public Administration, Consumer Behavior, Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design, Psychology, Elementary Education, or another related field that provides a knowledge base appropriate to the position.
-Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher).
Preferred:
-Skill in the use of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop.
-Two years of experience in public outreach and/or education, and in corporate or business social media management.
-Experience with public speaking.
Experience presenting to elementary or middle school groups, or demonstrated comfort engaging youth in educational settings.
Preference may be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid driver's license required. Must maintain during the period of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends (with advance notice) is required.
Knowledge of current marketing methods and strategies; knowledge of best practices in public outreach and customer engagement; knowledge of methods and strategies for encouraging behavioral changes in consumers, specifically as they relate to resource conservation and adopting sustainable practices.
Ability to create and implement effective public outreach programs; ability to work independently on assigned projects and tasks; ability to work cooperatively with others in a teaming environment; ability to drive a small pickup truck pulling a small trailer; ability to use common office equipment and tools; ability to speak persuasively to the public and to local officials about the important role of water utilities and for adopting sustainable practices and policies.
Skills That Will Make You Successful in This Role
Strong communication and outreach abilities such as giving presentations, leading workshops, supporting school programs, and engaging with residents or students, will help you thrive in this position. Experience creating basic outreach materials is also useful, including work in PowerPoint, Publisher, Canva, social media posts, or simple flyers and brochures. An interest in water conservation, environmental sustainability, or general knowledge of water and wastewater operations is helpful and supports the goals of this role.
Supplemental Information
Physical & Environmental Characteristics:
Physical Characteristics of Work: The work involves sitting 80% of the time; standing (but not walking) 10% of the time; standing and walking 10% of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds, infrequently lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds; and infrequently lifting objects from 25 to 50 pounds.
Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines (including inspection), using measurement devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
Environmental Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work). Occasional outside work is required at special events.
Examples of Equipment Used on the Job: Computer and peripheral equipment; software common to business and graphic design activities; digital photography equipment; general office equipment and tools such as phones, faxes, copiers, and others; automobiles such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, and small trailers.
Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, phone interview, onsite interview, performance exam, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check and a motor vehicle record check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.
The hiring department may forego phone interviews depending on the number of candidates.
